It is not only a replacement for the shack, hut or other sub-standard accommodation they were living in, but the start of a life free of the fear of sickness and disease. It is a life where children have the opportunity of a better education and are better able to stand on their own two feet and meet the challenges that life throws at them with confidence.

Kenya is home to more than 30 million people, of which nearly 60% are rural subsistence farmers. While some of Kenya’s rural communities are blessed with lush, green fields full of healthy crops, malaria, amoebic disorders, respiratory ailments and other diseases continue to claim the lives of thousands of villagers, the majority of whom live in poorly maintained, unhealthy homes.

Habitat for Humanity programme

HFH Kenya is the largest and oldest HFH programme in East Africa. More than forty-one active affiliates have built more than 2,200 houses in western and central Kenya.

All houses have concrete foundations and floors, durable walls made of brick, stone or stabilised soil block, and corrugated iron roofs. Houses average 34m² (about 360 sq ft).
