Story

HSBC Cheltenham 3 Peaks 24hr Challenge 2008 in aid of VSO

Thank you for visiting our fundraising page.

VSO's vision is of a world without poverty in which people work together to fulfil their potential. Instead of sending food or money, VSO send women and men from a wide range of professions who want the chance to make a real difference in the fight against poverty.

The part VSO plays in making this vision a reality is to promote volunteering to fight global poverty and disadvantage. VSO Volunteers work for, and often directly with, disadvantaged people in the poorest countries where they can make a significant contribution  – in Africa, Asia and the Caribbean and Pacific Islands.

VSO work to achieve a change for disadvantaged people in six 'goal' areas – education, HIV & AIDS, disability, secure livelihoods, participation and governance and health and social well-being.

The challenge is to climb the three highest peaks in the UK within 24 hours.

Ben Nevis (1344m) -  We have 5.5 hours to climb the highest mountain in Great Britain commencing at 5.10pm, before climbing aboard our mobile dormitory for the trip to Cumbria.

Scafell Pike (978m) - 4.5 hours to reach the summit of England's highest peak and climb aboard the waiting BankMobile before winding our way to Wales and the Snowdonia National Park.

Snowdon (1085m) - We have been allocated just 4 hours to complete Snowdon - without using the Snowdon Mountain Railway!!

The team consists of 7 walkers and 2 support crew. The walkers will climb a staggering 3407metres during their 14 hour - 23 mile walk and be driven 450 miles between stages by the support crew. So as you can see, we are up against the clock to complete this challenge in under 24 hours!

Our adventure will start on Friday 12th September as we begin the 440 mile, 8 hour journey to Ben Nevis. On Saturday 13th September, once registered and briefed, the challenge begins. Within the next 24 hours the team will need to complete their assault on Ben Nevis, followed by Scafell Pike and finally Snowdon.

Prior to the challenge the team are getting in shape by completeing a 26.5 mile walk in Cheltenham. Every Wednesday evening you will see the team out walking the hills around Cheltenham. Team members have been working out at the gym; seen walking the Malvern hills and roaming the Cornish countryside. With two members of the team holidaying in Italy before  the challenge, the chance has been taken to complete some training internationally.

With practice walks of Snowdon and Scafell under our belts already, the team has gained some valid insight in to how quickly the weather conditions can change.

The team will also be holding fundraising events at the Promenade branch in Cheltenham. The first event will be a Tombola event on the 8th August raised £260. Thank you to all of those who contributed prizes and bought tickets. A big big thank you must go to Joan who came in to work especially on her day-off to run the Tombola and for donating her days wage to our cause.

With your kind donations we aim to raise £5,000+ for VSO and all of the important work their volunteers undertake.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Voluntary Service Overseas gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
