Story
Across the world rhinos are on the brink of extinction because of poaching and a loss of habitat.
Actively supported by Save the Rhino International, Save the Rhino Trust (SRT) is an indigenous Namibian NGO actively engaged in the conservation of the
desert-adapted black rhino, (Diceros bicornis, for the budding zoologists amongst you…) which inhabits the communal areas in the arid north-west of the
Kunene and Erongo regions. This area of Namibia, part of the ancient Namib Desert, is home to a third of Africa's dwindling black rhino population and SRT has masterminded the recovery of this, one of the continent's last, truly wild populations.
SRT provides a conservation support service to Namibia's Ministry of
Environment and Tourism and the communal conservancies in the area, coordinating the monitoring and research needs of the rhino population.
SRT aims to promote the protection and sustainable management of black
rhino, elephant and other fauna and their environment. This is critical as,
in addition to poaching, environmental degradation and a loss of habitat is a major factor in bringing this incredible animal to the brink of extinction.
As a result of this work, SRT has overseen a 200% increase in rhino
numbers since beginning their research and monitoring in the 1980s.
In May I'm planning to cycle off-road for 11 days through Damaraland, in Namibia's NW Kunene region, with the objective of raising much needed funds
to enable SRT to continue their invaluable work, surveying and monitoring the local rhino population. The money raised will go direct to the SRT team on the ground in Namibia. It will not be subsidising administrative overheads, but directly fund local activities such as:
- covering salaries, uniforms and equipment of the rhino tracking teams
- vehicle fuel and maintenance costs
- an aerial survey
- on-going training and development of SRT and neighbouring conservancy game wardens
