Story
Along with nine workmates, I have just returned from Bangalore, in India, having spent time working with local people to help them build a house.
We dug foundations, laid bricks, mixed cement and spent time with Fathima and her family.
As you can imagine, it was a far cry from my usual daily routine spent in i-level’s gorgeous central London offices, being lunched by my media friends and hitting the local hostelries with my media colleagues after work.
The initiative goes some small way to addressing some the estimated 2.6 billion people worldwide who are trapped in a daily struggle to survive amid sub-standard, often inhumane, living conditions, in housing which is overcrowded, promotes ill health and limits children's ability to succeed at school. It also erodes hope and self-worth. It is demeaning and keeps poor people poor. Habitat for Humanity is dedicated to the ideal that all people deserve a simple, decent place to live
