Story

The Challenge is now complete!

Angus Thomson and David Hay have now successfully completed thier challenge. Due to  a change in weather forecasts they left 24 hours earlier than planned. Because of this they were not able to organise a chase boat and therefore did the crossings completely unsupported.

They departed Portpatrick harbour at 0835 last Friday morning and managed the crossing in just under 7 hours. The weather and sea state deteriorated in the late morning but improved again by early afternoon.

After a few pints of Guinness and excellent Irish hospitality (at Pier 36) they departed on Sunday morning with a slight tail wind. The sea state deteriorated fast and waves were breaking ove thier heads which meant a lot of time was spent on recovery strokes to prevent capsizing.  Despite this the favourable wind direction added about a knot (1.1 mph to their speed) and the pair were delighted to complete the return crossing in just under 6 hours.

The Teenage Cancer Trust:

Each day in the UK six teenagers will find out they have cancer -that is over 2200 teenagers every year.  Teenage Cancer Trust is a charity dedicated to helping teenagers fight cancer.  Incidence rates are now higher in teenagers and young adults than in children, yet survival rates fall behind those of children and older adults. Teenage Cancer Trust exists to ensure that teenagers and young adults are diagnosed efficiently, treated effectively, and have the support they need to make it through their treatment and rebuild their lives after cancer.

At present there is only one specialist unit in Scotland which is in Glasgow. All funds raised by this crossing will go towards building a specialist Teenage Cancer Trust Unit at the Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. This will be at a cost of £2m of which £1 million needs to be raised locally.

So please sponsor us to do this challenge and help to improve the lives of young people with cancer.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Teenage Cancer Trust will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
So please sponsor us now.

If you do not wish to donate through this website please make cheques payable to 'Teenage Cancer Trust' and post to: A.Thomson, 50/2 Thistle Street, Edinburgh, EH2 1EN.

Many thanks for your support. We will update the site again once we have completed the challenge.

Thanks for your support.
