The five of us have somehow decided that we would run a half marathon this year...and so it immediately made sense that we register for the biggest and most prestigious one on the planet – The Great North Run in Newcastle upon Tyne. Thankfully for us, the distance is still the same 13.1 miles as the rest...
Some of the team are experienced runners, others would currently struggle to cover the distance on a Nintendo Wii - but regardless of whether we are aiming for a PB or just to survive and tell the tale - your donations are greatly appreciated!
The team is raising money for an amazing charity - Leukaemia Research, both online and with some fantastic social/sporting events that are also in the pipeline. It's fair to say that without them there may well have been only four of us running!
Leukaemia and lymphoma are the most common cause of cancer death in people under 35.
Leukaemia Research is the only charity in the UK dedicated exclusively to researching blood cancers and disorders including leukaemia, Hodgkin’s and other lymphomas, and myeloma and are seeking to improve diagnosis of blood disorders and treatments for patients, and to find a cure for blood cancers.
110,000 people, children and adults alike, are living with these cancers today. 24,500 people are newly diagnosed with one of these conditions every year. We are committed to raising money so every one of them the best chance of survival.
* £25 could pay for a full set of booklets giving patients and their families information about their cancer when they need it most.
* £50 could pay for a pioneering test to measure the number of leukaemic cells in a patient’s blood, helping doctors to give appropriate doses of treatment.
* £200 could buy 200 kits to extract DNA from blood samples to see if there are any genetic faults and help diagnose cancers more effectively.
* £600 could pay for an MRD test, which improves the outcome for children with leukaemia by checking how they respond to treatment.
As if this isn’t reason enough, we will need your support (some more than others) just to cover the distance!
Thanks again for your support - see you at the finish!
