We raise funds to help us provide support to local kidney patients & their families

Story

Thanks so much for sponsoring Jennie on her cycle ride around the Doncaster Lakeside complex on 28th June to raise funds for Doncaster & Bassetlaw Kidney Association. She completed the 1.2 mile circuit on her own bike after practising on a hire bike at the National Trust's Clumber Park.

Bruce Stanley, Tony Jackson and Kerry Spyve had the original idea of doing a sponsored cycle to promote Renal Care in Doncaster and raise important funds for DaBKA. The aim was to promote leading a healthy lifestyle whilst living with the obvious restriction of being a kidney patient on dialysis. The idea became increasingly popular and many more cyclists, including Jennie, joined them.

DaBKA are busy compiling a questionnaire to patients / members about what to provide to make patients lives, and stays in hospital, more comfortable. One suggestion that has come up is providing a day of alternative therapies.

Our final total will just about reach £1000 with the gift aid supplement so a big thankyou to all our sponsors.

Jennies Story:

Jennie is 45 and has been in renal failure for 2 years. She has been a Type I diabetic since the age of 19. One of the serious complications of this disease over time is damage to the kidneys. Scarring and swelling in the filtering elements of the kidney causes protein to leak into the urine and eventually their vital function is lost. Jennie went into kidney failure following a severe bout of pneumonia in 2007 and has been on dialysis pretty much ever since.

She now has daily peritoneal dialysis at home which means she has to be connected to her dialysis machine for 10 hours every night. However her peritoneum is beginning to show signs of failure to dialyse effectively and it’s possible that within 2 years she will have to revert to hospital based haemodialysis.

Jennie is on the transplant list for a double kidney and pancreas transplant with the hope that this will transform her life and remove the dependency on her dialysis machine and insulin injection.

Jennie’s sister Sandra is a potential living kidney donor but Jennie has antibodies against her sister’s organ that make direct donation more complicated and risky. They are currently on the ‘pairs’ donation/recipient register hoping to find an opposite match.

Like many other kidney patients Jennie has benefited from the care and support of the staff at Doncaster Royal Infirmary Renal Unit, Bassetlaw General Hospital and the Sheffield Kidney Institute at the Northern General Hospital who are in turn supported by the volunteers and money raised by the Doncaster & Bassetlaw Kidney Association.

The Doncaster & Bassetlaw Kidney Association (DaBKA) was founded in 2008 by Alan Sutton, a Worksop businessman and long-standing renal patient, as a new interest group for local renal (kidney) patients.

Affiliated to the National Kidney Federation, this new group aims to help kidney patients and their families cope with renal disease by providing information and support, purchase equipment and help fund kidney research.

You can also support DaBKA in future when shopping on line at major companies (Asda, Tesco, Argos, Interflora etc) by using www.easyfundraising.org.uk and selecting DaBKA as your nominated charity.

Thank you for your generosity and support for DaBKA
