Story

Hi and thanks for visiting our fundraising page.

Jenny and I are planning to run the Great North Run for a charity close to our heart - the Diamond Blackfan Anaemia (DBA) Support Group UK.  We have a nephew who suffers from DBA.  However because of his condition he will require treatment for the rest of his life.

Diamond Blackfan Anaemia is a rare bone marrow disorder which results in the inability to produce red blood cells. The condition is extremely rare, affecting around 700 people world-wide. It requires intensive therapy, and has no known cure. There are currently two main treatment types for DBA, steroid therapy and transfusion therapy. These are life long treatments.

As there are only a few hundred people diagnosed with the condition, sufferers and their families often feel very isolated, helpless and afraid for the future.  Raising the profile of this rare and debilitating condition is extremely hard - which is where you lot come in!!

Sponsoring me helps DBA-UK support patients and families. DBA-UK also provides much needed funding to a research team based in St Georges Hospital, London. Research has been taking giant strides in the past couple of years and understanding what causes DBA is getting closer. So every penny counts.

Thanks again - Jen and Ed

ALSO GIVING BLOOD IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY HELPS THIS CONDITION AS BLOOD TRANSFUSIONS ARE NEEDED ON A REGULAR BASIS. SO GIVE BLOOD NOW!! TO FIND OUT WHERE YOUR NEAREST BLOOD COLLECTION IS TAKING PLACE GO TO WWW.BLOOD.CO.UK xxxx

About the charity

At DBA UK we aim to deliver support, research and hope to the DBA community in the UK by bringing families together, communicating the latest medical information and funding research into causes and cures.
