So please dig deep and donate now.
As you may or may not already now, I am raising money for the internally displaced children in Sri lanka by climbing Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest peak in Africa. These children have been left orphaned or without homes due to the lamentable civil war which came to an end recently. I hope you agree that this is a worthy cause.
The climb will involve a gruelling four day ascend up the mountain, followed by a two day descend. The main worry is not the physical climbing itself, but altitude sickness. At an astonishing 5,893 metres (19,334 ft) at the summit, the air can get very thin with low oxygen percentage. I am thoroughly looking forward to the challenge this poses and also hoping that conquering the summit will inspire you to donate to this worthwhile cause.
The money I raise will be going to the Chundikuli trust fund who have shown great promise and drive to help these children to a better life and future. They are running a project called 'Eagle Nest' where internally displaced children are taken into the St John's College Jaffna boarding houses. Here they are fed, clothed and educated; giving them the opportunity to better their lives and help their families out of poverty. What follows is a brief summary of the programme:
Beneficiaries
The poor and underprivileged students in the internally displaced
camps will be the direct beneficiaries of this project. Their families
will benefit indirectly and in the long term. The program will impact
those who were in war zone areas especially in the North. There is
no religious discrimination. So far St John’s College has admitted
495 IDP school children including 217 in the hostel. Totally St. Johns
College is planning to support and provide facility to 500 children.
Selection Criteria
The war affected children / youth in the areas of Wanni and
especially those who are currently in the internally displaced camps
in Vavunia are the target group. More specifically, selection will be
based on those who lost their parents, single parent and those who
are in lower poverty level and the evidence of pursuit of education
in the past and desire to persevere in future education. An effort
will be made to reach orphaned war victims. These criteria have
been drawn up mainly by our project staff in consultation with
volunteers who work with St John’s College Jaffna and are drawn
from the operational region. Our plan is to provide hostel facility
and maintain their education to orphans, single parent, lower
poverty level children and the needy.
I very much hope that you will feel it not only worthwhile to donate to this project, but also necessary. Any amount you can donate, however small, is very much appreciated and will go a long way.
