Story

Hi

In August 2010 i am going to spend 12 months volunteering in an Orphanage in Kathmandu in Nepal. I will be living and working on site at Aishworya Childrens Home which currently has 32 small children aged 5-16.

Most of the children here have had a torrid time. Their parents have either died, have been killed, are in jail, are too ill from disease to look after them or have completely disappeared. Several have been abused either by their parents or have been sent to work as children and have been abused by employers. You can read all of the childrens stories at www.aishworya.org

During my year at Aishworya i will be helping out in every capacity i can. I will be responsible for teaching health and sanitation, teaching english in their school, running activities for the children (rafting, trips out, sightseeing, cultural visits, games), teaching sports - especially football, helping them with homework and spending as much time as possible with them to help them feel like they have a family environment.

The childrens home has been running for seven years now. The owner Nirmala first found two boys on the streets in Balaju, dirty, hungry, homeless and crying. She initially cared for them and then took them to an orphanage. A few weeks later she found a couple more boys and took them along also. The owner of the orphanage had a heart attack and the boys were all moved to different orphanages where they were beaten regularly and badly cared for.

She decided she could not stand by any longer and took the other four boys home, quit her job, sold her land and set up her own orphanage. Please read more about the incredible work Nirmala has been doing at www.aishworya.org

This will also hopefully give you a feel for where i will be helping out.

If you agree that this is a worthy cause then please make your donation on this page. Every penny counts!

I've been selected for this project by ICYE - UK as they believe i can make a big contribution to the upbringing and happiness of these children. I believe i have an enormous amount to give and a wealth of experience from coaching roles to landwork!

ICYE - UK is a registered national charity (1081907) working in the area of youth development. The charity gives young people the opportunity to help and support disadvantaged individuals all over the world. Whilst i may no longer be a "young person" i believe my age and experience will enable me to go even further in helping their cause! I hope you agree with me!

The money raised will cover my flight and insurance and will help cover the costs of an international volunteer from Nepal or one of the many other countries around the world that ICYE is associated with, to come and work in a domestic charity or social project in the UK.

Please visit www.icye.org.uk to see more of how their work is benefitting others.

I really appreciate everyone's help with this - thank you so much!!
