On the 1st August 2010 I will be entering the UK Ironman (www.ironmanuk.com) taking place in Bolton, Lancashire. An ultra long triathlon consisting of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and a 26.2 mile run. I will be doing this in aid of ASBAH ( Association for Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus).

As many of you will know I was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus when i was 18. ASBAH supported my family and me through my 5 years of treatment.

I consider myself very fortunate that I have not suffered any of the long term side effects associated with Hydrocepalus such as learning difficulties, disability, visual impairment and epilepsy. I have been able to lead an extremely active lifestyle, I work as a Personal Trainer and even returned to playing rugby again.

I am very keen to give something back to the charity and increase awareness of Hydrocephalus. I have been training intensely for the last few months and am committed to raising as much as possible for this incredibly worthwhile charity.

The term ‘hydrocephalus' is from two Greek words meaning ‘water in the head'. In fact, the ‘water' is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), a clear liquid which is produced all the time in the cavities or ventricles inside the brain. This would normally be absorbed  back into the bloodstream via the spinal cord. Hydrocephalus is caused by the inability of CSF to drain away.
