Story
Hello Everyone,
I am running the London Marathon in 2008 for AMMF (The Alan Morement Memorial Fund). This will be my 5th London although it is some 15 years since I did the last.
The reason I am running for AMMF is that I used to share an office with Alan & Helen Morement back in the 1990s when Alan was diagnosed with a rare cancer. Like so many cases of cancer I used to wonder why it was Alan - there was absolutely nothing about his lifestyle which would invite such a cruel disease.
I realise there are many other great cancer specific charities doing fantastic work. Some are small and some are extremely large organisations with heavy admin costs. However, with AMMF, I know that all the money you pledge will go direct to research teams dedicated to finding cures and treatments. Just look at the AMMF website to see what they do. Helen and the team are amazingly dedicated and need all the financial help they can get to fund the scientists.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: AMMF will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
BELOW IS AN EXTRACT FROM THE WEBSITE
Alan died from cholangiocarcinoma, a rare form of liver cancer, at the end of the year 2000. In order to do something positive in his memory AMMF (The Alan Morement Memorial Fund) was set up and registered as a charity with the aim of raising funds for research into cancer, particularly into the causes, treatments and cures for cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and especially cholangiocarcinoma.
Being considered a rare cancer which affected relatively few people, very little research has been undertaken into cholangiocarcinoma. However over the last few years, an enormous and extremely worrying increase in the incidence of this cancer has been flagged and research into its causes (one of which is thought to be environmental toxins) is now beginning in earnest. This research is something AMMF aims to support.
There are well-publicised, large charities working to fund their own research into many different areas of cancer, but we were spurred on to form AMMF because we wanted to be able to support those research teams, usually small and highly specialised, working in specific areas (see Donations and Grants Made page for the teams AMMF has supported over the last year).
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online. Thanks John Overy
