Hello there friends, foe and Englishmen.
Recently my Grandad passed away with no hint or warning. Of course, he suffered from the general stresses & strains and wear & tear of life but we had no idea that he had the UK's biggest cancer killer - Cancer of the bowel.
Grandad didn't know he had the Cancer until it was too late. For the hundred or so people being diagnosed everyday with the disease it is an easily prevented form of cancer IF spotted early. Everyone loves stats:
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the UK
When bowel cancer is found early more than eight out of ten people will survive.
Two-thirds of bowel cancer cases could be prevented by changes to lifestyle.
So in honour of the big man I wanted to challenge myself and raise some awareness/cash for the Bobby Moore Fund who research bowel cancer and how it can be spotted and prevented earlier.
I'm doing a 1/2 marathon which would be scary enough (having never run further than 10km before!) but to up the ante it will be along the hills and cliffs of the Dorset coast. For the rambler, Dorset is universally celebrated for its beauty and diversity, this however is one of the most demanding events around including a scramble up to the highest point of the south coast of Britain, Golden Cap.
Any support is gratefully received.
Thank you for your time and wish me luck!
