THE BIG CHOP: ONE YEAR ON (August 2009)

 

         I can hardly believe that a year has almost passed by since 'The Big Chop' event, in which I had all forty six of my much loved dreadlocks chopped off to raise money for Pratham UK.

        My initial fundraising target back in September 2008 was £300, but thanks to the generosity of all those kind people who have donated, I have managed to more than quadruple that amount !

        100% of all the money that I raise will go to help educate underprivileged children in India, who live in the slum and shanty town areas of Mumbai (Bombay), the city where I was born. When I visited India in April 2008, I was shocked and saddened by the extreme child poverty that I witnessed on the streets of Mumbai. I promised myself that I would try to help these children in some way and so I am very happy that my fundraising is going so well.

         Fundraising for Pratham UK over the past year has motivated and inspired me to venture to India in order to help these children at a grassroots level. So on 16th September 2009, I fly out on a one-way ticket to Mumbai. I will be visiting some of the slum and shanty town areas of Mumbai to see how the money that I have raised is helping these children. I will be volunteering as a teacher with Pratham Mumbai during September and October 2009, teaching English and also trying my best to learn Hindi, so that I can help these children as much as possible. I will take photos and video clips to send to donors so that they can see some of the children that they will be helping.

         My target of £1400 will help educate 196 children per year. Education is the only way out of poverty for these children. Most of us were lucky enough to have a good education, please help these children! I know that we can reach this target together! Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Pratham UK gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
