Story
Back in October in a moment of madness I agreed to cycle from John O’Groats to Land’s End with a few friends. It is a 9 day ride in mid June covering over 1000 miles (approximately 115 miles per day). The cumulative average daily climb is 8000ft (to put this into perspective Ben Nevis is 4500ft) and we are likely to be in the saddle for about 8 hours every day – sounds all too painful and I’m only glad that we’re not planning an extended family!
However, all will not be in vain as I’m hoping to raise a significant amount of money for the charity, ‘The Mango Tree’. This is a charity focussed on the desperate needs of the orphans in Tanzania and Kenya. It aims to fill the enormous gap left by the absence of parents, often due to AIDS, and currently supports about 12,000 children. Its main focus is on education which is the only way out for many of these children and is arguably the best way to drive real progress in Africa.
While schools in Tanzania are free, many orphans are excluded given they cannot afford the necessary uniforms – just £2 will buy a school uniform.
There is a cost to secondary education which again means many children are excluded – just £70 will provide a school place for a child for a whole year.
Donations are very efficiently and effectively used with no cost for admin or fundraising activities in the UK and with a good network of volunteers in every village helping the charity to focus on orphans with the greatest needs.
As you can see, a little goes a long way and any donation will be greatly appreciated and will make a real difference.
MANY THANKS!
