Story

Hi Everyone

I am taking my walks this year to a new level. In 2008 I will be competing in the Playtex Moonwalk (where you walk in your bra) which happens at Midnight in London on 17th May. I am walking along with Jackie 13.2 miles.

I am hoping to raise at least £300 for this charity and I am hoping that once you have visited this page you will dig deep and want to sponsor me online.

My story

My name is Kelly Charles, and I am fromCorby, I was told I carried a gene called BRCA 1 which means I have up to an 80% chance of developing either or both breast and ovarian cancer.

My mum Sue first developed breast cancer 16 years ago and underwent surgery to remove the lump. But eight years on, in 1998, mum visited the doctor with a swollen stomach and tests revealed that she had developed ovarian cancer. Doctors did everything they could but they just couldn’t remove all of the tumour. She had chemotherapy and got herself onto two different trials but one day she went into hospital and just didn’t come out.

Because mum had lost my aunt Theresa to breast cancer five years earlier she had undergone a test to find out if she carried the faulty BRCA1 gene which is linked to an approximate 80 per cent increase in the likelihood of developing the disease. The results came through after mum died I didn't even know she had been tested. I was in complete shock and decided to get myself tested straight away. I remember going to see the specialist for the results with my partner Paul thinking it was negative. The news that I was also a carrier didn’t really hit me until a couple of days later. That was when the tears came. Since then I have been closely monitored for signs of the disease by specialists atAddenbrookesHospital in Cambridge. I’ve had one scare but they’ve been absolutely brilliant, they found a lump but I had it removed during an MRI scan and it turned out to be nothing more than fatty tissue.

So now I do what I can to raise awareness and try to raise money. So if you can sponsor me even a few pounds every little amount helps. I will attempt to keep a blog from my training and will put some new images up soon to show you my training,

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page. Please dig deep and sponsor me online.

Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Walk The Walk Worldwide will receive your money faster and, if you are a taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.

Love and Hugs and A BIG THANK YOU.
