Story
South Pole Unsupported Expedition 2009
After losing my younger sister to leukaemia I wanted to do something to help others who suffered from the disease. In 2006 by walking unsupported to the North Pole generously sponsored by a lot of people I was able to raise almost £100,000 to fund the construction of a new ward at the North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre (see photos on www.southpole2009.com).
Now, with my son Matt (see www.justgiving.com/mattgaskell) I have walked unsupported to the geographical South Pole. We pulled 80kg sledges in average temperatures of minus 40C -our coldest day was minus 47C - and whilst the winds were quite kind to us the effective elevation of 12,000 feet was a real challenge. We are one of the very few father / son teams to have attempted this route and at 18 Matt has become one of the the youngest people ever to complete it.
Every penny raised will go to funding critical leukaemia research and so please help us by contributing what you can afford to give. Remember that if you or your loved ones were, heaven forbid, struck by this terrible disease you would want the best care possible. This requires us to conduct and fund new research now.
Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Leukaemia Research gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
If you would prefer to donate by cheque, cash, money transfer or even green shield stamps please contact me by email at southpole2009@rocketmail.com.
