Press Release:
ASHTON FOOTBALL TOURNAMENT AIMS TO KICK OUT CANCER
Event Organisers James & Alex Kay
Eight communities from across Greater Manchester will come together on Sunday 2nd November to play in a football tournament aimed at kicking out cancer. The event takes place at Ashton United FC in Ashton Under Lyne from 2pm until 6pm with the teams competing in a round robin phase of short matches leading to semi-finals and finals.
The event is being organised by brothers James and Alex Kay, both from Ashton in memory of their grandfather Jack Kay who suffered from an asbestos related cancer and passed away earlier this year.
24 year old James said “This event will raise funds 50/50 for Cancer Researchand Barts and the London Charity, A range of communities and different people are coming together for this event and we hope the money raised will support research into cancer and better treatment for patients. There will be something for all the communities brought together on the day with lots of entertainment and (hopefully) some great football!’’
St Barts and the charity, which is one of the two chosen charities is one of the few sites in the undertaking research into Mesothelioma – a cancer of the lining of the lung caused by exposure to asbestos dust. There is no cure and life expectancy from diagnosis is typically between 12 and 18 months. Mesothelioma causes more than 1800 deaths per year in theyet there is very little funding for research into a cure.
The teams are coming together from a variety of groups and communities specially for the event and confirmed teams so far include:-
Hartshead X1, St Damians Re-, Stalyvegas boys, Textmi.com, Sundaynights.co.uk with the remainding three teams to be confirmed over the next 3 days.
Steven Farr from Cancer Research added “this promises to be a great event where everyone can come and help make a difference whilst having a great day out and plenty of fun. The money raised will help our doctors, scientists and nurses keep families together for longer and help more people beat this disease.
Admission to the general public to come and watch the game will be £5 for adults, and £2 for children, payable at the gates on the day.
