Story
‘The Hayride’ is a charity cycle ride organised by King Sturge. The route from Hay-on-Wye to Cardiff covers approximately 66 miles via Three Cocks, Talgarth, Langorse, Bwlch, Talybont, Torpantau, Pontsticill, Merthyr, Aberfan, Abercynon, Pontypridd, Treforest, Taffs Well, Morganstown and along the Taff Trail into Cardiff.
The event was conceived in 1999 and has to date raised over £50,000 for charity. The inaugural event in 1999 was completed by 10 riders but in 2006 the numbers had swelled to 50. This year King Sturge has teamed up with The Wooden Spoon as their charity.
The Wooden Spoon Society and The Toby Lloyd Cockbain Foundation have set the goal of raising £300,000 for the Children and Young People Oncology Unit at the new Children’s Hospital for Wales. The money will provide both a specialist child scanner and a play area for the immunosuppressed children who attend the oncology ward. Children with cancer often need to spend long periods of time on the ward or in beds; the exclusive play area would provide excellent diversion therapy and also essential mobilisation for those in-patient children.
