It’s with much regret and great sadness, I have had to retire from the 2008 London Marathon due to a serious knee injury.
The injury and pain started when I’d just finished an 18 mile run and I actually felt pretty good, I even managed a PB of just over 3 hours! Not quite challenging Paula but not bad for me! Minutes after finishing there was a shooting pain through the side of my knee and I just couldn’t stand, falling to the pavement in a heap! I’m sure I’ve told most of you about the little old man that helped pick me off the street and gave me a lift home. On my physio’s orders I’ve rested for the last 3 weeks and was hopeful that with the right treatment I could recover and at least make it round. Having tried to get back into it this week, I’m still experiencing pain and I’ve come to the realistic conclusion that it’s just not worth doing any serious damage that may affect my future. I’ve therefore today withdrawn.
The last 3 months have been hard work but I’ve amazed myself as to just what I can do when I put my mind to something! Having never run seriously and certainly not having run over 3 miles at anytime during 2007, I started training on the 1st January 2008 and have to date covered a huge 323 miles! Something I really never thought was possible. I can honestly say without hesitation that training for the London Marathon has been the toughest physical and mental experience that I have had to encounter thus far! and having taken several thousand drunken Liverpoodlians to both Istanbul and Athens that really is saying something.
The good news! As I have withdrawn before the event with an injury I am now guaranteed a place in the 2009 race. I am planning to get my knee seen to and start training again as soon as possible, spreading the training over the next 12 months. I’ll keep you all updated on my progress but I’m hoping to do my first triathlon in July!
All sponsorship that has been made online through Justgiving has already been given to Clic Sargant. This Justgiving page will remain active for another 12 months covering the 2009 event and I’ll keep updating it with any further events I’m looking to do.
All that’s left to say, is thanks to you all for your support, I’m sorry I wasn’t able to see it through this year but I will be back in 2009!
Remember you can sponsor me any time and donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: CLIC Sargent will receive your money faster and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.
Thanks so much again for your support.
Lots of love
