Story
Over the first weekend of August, Sandra, Lauren, Joe, Neil,Tony, Guy, Deighton and JB are undertaking the "Three Peaks Challenge": in under 24 hours, we have to drive to, then climb the highest mountain in each of England, Scotland and Wales - so one of the peaks has to be climbed at night! We'll be doing this to raise money for the charity, DebRA.
DebRA helps sufferers of Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) - a very rare genetic condition in which the skin and internal body linings blister at the slightest knock or rub, causing painful, open wounds: it means that parents cannot even pick up their babies who suffer from it, eating of solids is, in many cases, almost impossible, as the mouth and throat also blister, and the disposal of the body waste is incredibly painful. When this condition applies, malnutrition is often a consequence, further reducing the body's resistance to infection. The condition affects 1 in 17,000 births.
People with the more severe types of EB also have an exceptionally high risk of developing skin cancers, shortening their lives by approximately 30-40 years. In its most severe form, the condition is fatal in infancy. As yet, there is no effective treatment or a cure.
