The event:My house mate and I have decided to undertake the slightly daunting task of cycling from Lands End to John O Groats. We will be doing this at the end of May 2010 and it will probably take 20 days (yes I know the record is currently 2, but I'm not superman!)
To make this endeavor a little more meaningful I will be raising money for
Sense About Science. I feel quite strongly about the misrepresentation of science in today’s media and the skewed public debates we then have resulting from a lack of evidence based argument. The fact that climate change now has the status of
a religion just about sums up the terrible state of popular science at the moment. I know money is tight these days but ever bit will help as they are a small charity and it will count. Thank you.
From the Sense about Science web site:Sense About Science is an independent charitable trust promoting good science and evidence in public debates. We do this by promoting respect for evidence and by urging scientists to engage actively with a wide range of groups, particularly when debates are controversial or difficult.
We work with scientists to
o respond to inaccuracies in public claims about science, medicine, and technology
o promote the benefits of scientific research to the public
o help those who need expert help contact scientists about issues of importance
o brief non-specialists on scientific developments and practices
Sense About Science is governed by a Board of Trustees and run by a small office staff. We are supported by an Advisory Council and over 2,000 scientists and other specialists, ranging from Nobel Laureates to postdoctoral fellows, who are signed up to our database, Evidence Base. We also work with younger scientists in our VoYS (Voice of Young Science) programme, which you can read more about here.
