Story
I'm travelling from Land's End to John O'Groats, in the very north of Scotland, by bus using my "OLD GITS" bus pass and return in one trip. It is taking over 13 days and involve a planned 66 different busses. Why do it? Although it has been done before, my trip will be the fastest return by bus pass and unique in the fact that I don't stop at John O'Groats but cross to the Orkneys as well. I will be the oldest person to do it (74) and the first powered by a heart pacemaker. Generously, the bus companies in Scotland, namely Stagecoach and First Group, have embraced this challenge and granted me free travel in Scotland. I have also found some sponsorship for overnight stays in Swindon, Lancaster, Perth, Inverness and Cheltenham while friends and family have pitched in to look after me in Cornwall, Exeter and Derby. All money raised will be donated to BBC Children in Need.
Details of the route have now been finalised and people, particularly other "Old Gits" with bus passes, are invited to join me on various legs. Already I have some offers of company in Leicester and the Peak District but welcome more. Pudsey would also like some additional company - he's getting bored with our limited conversation! The journey started at Land's End on Monday 4th August at 09.41, reaching John O'Groat's on Sunday 10th August and crossing to Burwick in the Orkneys then returning to Land's End on Saturday 16th August at 16.36. Over 13 days travel, 66 buses and more than 2000 miles, not counting the hop over to the Orkney Islands - Am I mad or what?
