Event: Virgin London Marathon 2010, on 25 April 2010
We help blind and partially sighted people to break down the barriers of sight loss

Story

I have just completed my 4th marathon since serious training began last November – in South Africa we are crazy roadrunners, now the Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56km) in Cape Town on Easter Saturday followed by THE VIRGIN LONDON MARATHON  so excited to be taking part. Running the London Marathon will be made extra special for me by my fundraising for RNIB. Over the years many organisations have been very kind to me, and through running the London Marathon for RNIB I will be able to give something back.

In 2001 I was diagnosed with early onset macular degeneration, though the leading cause of low vision in the over 60, I was only 49. I went from a busy administration to life at home on a disability pension. It seems that I may have inherited the genetic link for my AMD from a relative, Wilfred Rhodes who played cricket for Yorkshire and England and was completely blind by the age of 68.

Running has been a life saver for me, though my knees, hands and elbows bear the scars of many falls, it has been worth it. I started running in 1997 and that year completed my first Comrades Marathon (89km) with an 11 hour cut off. In 2008 I completed my 10th and was awarded my ‘green’ permanent number. This year I hope to complete my 10th Two Oceans Ultra Marathon (56km) and get my ‘blue’  permanent number. Over the years I have lost count of the number of races of all distances I have taken part in. I must have done over 70 marathons. I have also ridden in the Argus Cycle Tour (108km) in Cape Town twice and once in the 94.7km cycle race in Johannesburg

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: RNIB gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.)
