Story

Last May my wife Louise was diagnosed with an aggressive breast cancer. At the time she was 37 years old. She only found the cancer by chance, and although the tumour was small it had already spread to her lymph nodes. She underwent 9 months of treatments - chemotherapy, two operations and radiotherapy. Through all the suffering this caused she has been an inspiration - even when she was weak and tired her sense of humour and positive outlook were ever present. She is now taking drugs every day to help prevent the cancer returning - these have a number of side effects, but she is back at work and enjoying life to the full. Clearly cancer treatment is improving all the time and she received amazing care from the doctors and nurses treating her, but her passion for life and positive attitude have been a major contribution. Myself and some friends decided we wanted to celebrate Louise's sense of fun and willingness to face challenges head on and raise some money at the same time. As keen cyclists, we decided that a ride from London to Brighton of around 56 miles including the ascent of Ditchling Beacon would be a good challenge - especially if we spent no more than £56 (£1 per mile) on the bikes we use for the ride to introduce some humour - and make it harder! Most of us ride expensive modern racing bikes, but for this caper we used all manner of totally unsuitable machinery,  testing Lance Armstong's claim that "Its not about the bike" to the full on 13th June. Over 11 hours after we started we made it to Brighton beach. One big crash, an exploding tire, a detour for repairs which meant some of us ended up doing 70 miles, several brake failures and a lot of laughter could not stop us. Please sponsor us for as much as you can - we are raising money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer, a charity which funds important and groundbreaking research which will help improve diagnosis, treatment and care for those suffering with breast cancer.
