Story
During my antenatal classes i was told of the likelihood of giving birth prematurely with twins but at 31 weeks pregnant laying on the bed in a maternity ward in RUH Bath, i never in the world thought that i would be told i needed to be moved to another hospital as there were not enough incubators at the one i was in.
The drugs given to stop the contractions had worked until the trauma of being bounced around in the back of an ambulance on the way to a hospital 50 miles away in Newport, they started again.
I gave birth by emergency caesarean at 5.50am the following morning. My son was very ill, his lungs had not developed enough to breath on his own and he was put on a ventilator. His heart stopped a few times in the first week and he was a week old before i was able to hold him for the first time.
After nearly 3 weeks we returned to Bath and spent the next 2 weeks preparing to go home.
Without the specialist equipment and care received by the neonatal units at Newport and Bath my twins would not be here today however the conditions at the neonatal at RUH are cramped and noisy and quite often mothers to be like myself find themselves being taken to other hospitals as there is no space in the existing unit.
I am raising funds to go towards the Neonatal 'space to grow' funds to help build a new Neonatal Unit more than doubling the existing unit and to improve the facilities.
