We work with others to overcome poverty and suffering.

Story

This weekend just gone (30th/31st May) we started the 100km walk at 8am Saturday morning, the weather was brilliant sun and clear blue skies and around 26 Degrees; normally this would be great but it made walking on the open dales hard, very hard.

With grit and determination we scaled the first half of the course with little problems (the 6 months of 15-26 mile walks every weekend paid off!) even pen-y-gent the one mountain on the course didn’t faze us.

Disaster struck when we reached check point 3 at roughly midnight (45 miles in) when Kate who had been walking on foot sized blister for the last 10 miles and probably had heat stroke, had a bout of projectile vomit. As a team we decided for the safety of Kate and us, that it was best for Kate to retire even though she really wanted to finish it with us.

The rest of us gutted to have lost a team member, hobbled off into the darkness for the 4th checkpoint (last one before the finish).  By the time we reached the 4th checkpoint Liam has also gain some foot sized blister, but so close to the end he had the doctor wrap them up. Myself and Steve also suffering from cramps, exhaustion decided that a sports massage might help, but I’m sure they guy that did mine was some sort of sadist!

By the time we were all semi sorted, it was just getting light at 4am,  we head off for yet another 250meter climb, the route to the next water station was a hard one with Steve picking up a knee injury a lot the way, progress was slow, but against our better judgement we were going to finish.

Reaching the last water station, we were told there were only 4.6 miles to the finish, we soon began to realise that it wasn’t 4.6 miles but more like 9.6 mile; body's shatters, minds broken, 30 odd hours with no sleep taking its toll, I personally feel like I’d died a bit inside that day, but after all that......

****** We made it 100km in 27hours 22mins

Personally crossing that line I wanted to cry I didn’t know if it was because of the pain, the fact we did it or countless other unknown reasons, but it defiantly was a mix of every emotion possible; sadness, anger, happiness, relief......

I want to thank our support team (Richard and Paul) for being amazing, they were part of our success, and we couldn’t have done it without them!

I would also like to say a big thank you to all you people who support us, between us we have achieve amazing things and it’s something I won’t forget for a long time.

Lastly and most importantly I want to thank my team members without them the finish wouldn’t have been possible thanks Kate, Liam and Steve.

Many thanks all

Phil
