Story

Thank you for visiting my Byte Night page.  Now please take a moment to consider a few statistics [source: NCH]:

* An estimated 77,000 children and young people aged under 18 run away overnight each year in the UK.
* There are an estimated 32,000 homeless 16-21 year-olds in Britain.
* A third of young homeless people have tried to commit suicide.
* Each year, 10,000 young people are physically hurt or sexually assaulted whilst sleeping rough.
* Most runaways are aged 13-15 but a quarter are under 11.

You can help.

On 5th October 2007, I will be joining a group of IT Professionals sleeping rough in London as part of Byte Night 2007 -
the IT industry’s annual sleep out in support of young people who are coping with life after care or facing homelessness.

Since its inception in 1998, Byte Night has raised over £1.5m for NCH youth homeless projects.

Here’s some idea of how your donations could help:

£5 could pay for emergency overnight support for a young person living on the street.
£10 could pay for a one-to-one advice session for a young person leaving care.
£10 could pay for a child to have a hot lunch every day for a week.
£15 could provide a bath, three emergency meals, laundry, personal items and emergency medication for a young person living on the street.
£20 helps pay for a personal adviser to help a young person find work or training.
£25 could keep the doors of one of NCH’s youth homelessness projects open for one hour.
£60 could help NCH arrange supported lodgings with a caring family for a young homeless person.
£90 could help NCH find a home for a teenager who’s got nowhere to live.
£100 could buy a bed and bedding for a young homeless person moving into their first flat.
£300 could keep a young homeless person in supported lodgings for a month.
£500 could pay for emergency overnight accommodation for up to 20 vulnerable young people.
£500 could keep the doors of an emergency drop-in centre for young homeless people open for a week.
£600 could keep the doors of one of NCH’s leaving care and homelessness projects open for one week.
£5,000 could pay for a new kitchen in one of NCH’s leaving care and homelessness projects.
£8,500 could pay for a part-time counselling support worker for young homeless people.
£10,000 could keep a leaving care project open for three months.
£10,000 could furnish a small interdependent living house where a group of young homeless people can learn to live independently in a supportive environment.
£55,000 could set up an emergency overnight accommodation project for young people sleeping rough.
£500,000 could fund a new homelessness project for three years.

Many thanks for your support.
