Story

Hi, and thanks for visiting my page.

The aim of this event is to try and raise £2400 each for help for heroes, by carrying out a 24 peak challenge in August 2009.

What is a 24 Peak Challenge?

The 24 Peak Challenge will be to ascend 24 of the highest peaks in the Lake District, each over 2,400 feet high, in 24 hours over 2 days of walking.

We'll be "bagging":  Red Pike, High Stile, High Crag, Green Gable, Great Gable, Lingmell, Scafell Pike, Great End, Esk Pike, Bow Fell, Red Screes, Dove Crag, Hart Crag, Fairgield, Seat Sandal, Dollywagon Pike, Nethermost Pike, hellvelyn, Lower Man, Whiteside, High Raise, Stybarrow Dodd, Watson Dodd and Great Dodd, before returning home in time for toast and medals.

Why?

Because it's there!  Seriously though, I am an ex-soldier, and watching what our servicemen and women have to go through on active service these days is tough enough, without seeing the horrendous injuries some of them have to live with on returning home.  Help for Heroes raises money to provide support, rehabilitation and medical care for injured Service Personnel.

So far H4H has been able to commit £12M to provide direct support for wounded service personnel.  The ethos is..Money in, Money out.  Direct action is the name of the game, and every single penny given will be used to supplement the available facilities and care so that those in rehabilitation get the very best facilities and treatment in order to recover from their injuries and rebuild their careers.

As an ex-soldier I know that for every single soldier, sailor or airman/woman you hear about killed in action several others will have been injured, many times trying to help those killed.

How Much Shall I give?

Whatever you can afford!  It doesn't matter if it's 1p or £1000, it'll all go towards helping others.

Challenge Summary

Well, unfortunately our attempt this year was unsuccessful.  A combination of severe weather conditions and equipment problems meant that we were forced to abandon our attempt after 14 hours of walking.  Richard had to leave the team when his boots disintegrated from under him, and Paul and Garry pressed on until being forced back from Great Gable by torrential rain, almost zero visibility and 50 + mph winds;  what an August bank Holiday!

Despite this the team managed to ascend: Red Pike, The Saddle, Chapel Crags, High Stile, Comb Crags, High Crag, Gamlin End, Seat, Scarth Gap Pass, Haystacks, Brandreth, Gillercombe Head, Green Gable and made an attempt at Great Gable before being forced back.

Many thanks to everyone who showed support for us, and rest assured we'll be back again to complete all 24 peaks soon!
