Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my page.
On Sunday 11th July 2010, I will be running the Asics 10km London Run. For someone like myself, to whom both physical exertion and a discipline to train and work regularly have never come easy, I felt I needed to set myself a challenge!
My aim is to do the distance in less than 1 hour. (Oh, and to avoid any "Paula Radcliffe-esque" moments!)
In order to give me extra motivation, I have decided to run in aid of Acorns Children's Hospice, based in Birmingham and across the West Midlands.
This is a charity which offers support and care to life-limited children - Kids who are not going to reach adulthood.
They offer 24-7-365 support to the kids and their families, including short breaks, emergency and end of life care, as well as counselling and bereavement support specifically tailored for each member of the family. They currently care for over 600 kids and their families.
It costs £4500 a day to run a 10 bed unit, and Acorns relies on charitable donations to fund over 80% of the £6 million a year needed to maintain its current service.
As well as financially, Acorns relies heavily on volunteers efforts to support them. I am proud to say that both my Grandparents in Birmingham have worked as volunteers for Acorns for 20 years now, which is one of my main reasons for choosing this charity. The stories that they tell of the the work done by Acorns to care for the kids and families is both inspiring and humbling.
And so my aim is to raise £450. This will cover the cost of one child's care for one day in one of their hospices. The chance to care for someone who will never experience the life that many of us simply take for granted, and to make every day that they have an extra special and enjoyable one.
On behalf of myself and the charity, thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and for your anticipated support - Please believe how very much it is appreciated.
