Story
We are a team of RAF and Cobham Aviation engineers, who have commited ourselves to completing a 220 mile bike ride from RAF Waddington in Lincoln to Cobham Aviation's main headquaters in Bournemouth, in order to raise as much as possible for the Macular Disease Society. Unfortunately we are a group of novice cyclists who have very little cycling experience, therefore we will be training throughout the winter to get ready for what to us is a mammoth ride. We will also be joined on the last day by my sister and her fiance, as they want to do their bit in helping us reach our target, as neither of them even own a bike yet this will be a big ordeal for them which they will training hard to achieve.

The reason we are planning this ride is to help a charity very important to my family. Earlier last year my sister was diagnosed with pics disease in one eye, this is a rare form of macular disease which usually affects young women in their twenties. Unfortunately it took time to diagnose as little is known of this condition resulting in the loss of vertually all the sight in one of her eyes. Earlier this year she also contracted the same disease in her one good eye, although devastated she knew the signs and was able to see a consultant straight away. Despite this she was informed there was nothing that could be done and the only option was experimental injections which would not be funded by the NHS due to lack of research, inconsistant results and the high costs involved. Fortunately my sister was put in touch with the Macular Disease Society who were able to support and help her, enabling her to have the injections that could potentially save her sight. Fortunately the injections did work and she has vertually all the vision in one eye, enabling her to carry on with a relatively normal life.
My family will forever be grateful to the Macular Disease Society for the support they offered. Hopefully this charity ride will go some way towards showing our appreciation, but more importantly with your donations we can help other people in my sisters situation, support those who suffer from this condition and more importantly try to find a cure for this horrific disease.
