Story
On Sunday 26th April, 2009 the Flora London Marathon takes place. Nothing unusual about that you're thinking...? Well, this time there will be an added feature to the start line and hopefully the finish line a few hours later...me. Michael Smart.
Having watched the TV coverage many times in the past, I have finally decided to set the Sunday papers aside and get my carcass off the couch in an attempt to run the 26.2 miles they call a marathon.
Now the serious bit...
As this event is my first and possibly, no better make that probably, my last ever marathon, I have decided to make all the forthcoming toil and suffering worthwhile by running in aid of a charity which has a special significance for me and my family, The National Autistic Society.
Autism is a lifelong developmental disability affecting over 500,000 individuals in the UK. Despite this, awareness is still relatively low and the condition much misunderstood.
My six year old son and seven year old nephew have both been diagnosed with Autistic Spectrum Disorder therefore raising awareness and some much needed funds on behalf of the National Autistic Society seemed the natural choice.
My target sum of money is £1600. A donation of any size, large or small would be gratefully received. Your help will allow individuals and families whose lives are touched by autism to have a better chance of accessing the help, support and understanding they need and deserve. Please dig deep!
Now...just the small matter of getting the training done!
Many thanks in anticipation.
Michael
