We provide support and fund vital research to make myeloma history

Story

Thank you for visiting my fundraising page.

In July 2007 my mum became very poorly. We discovered, after she was rushed into hospital, that she had myeloma (a debilitating form of bone marrow cancer). Unlike other cancers it can go unnoticed and, although it doesn't spread, it does get progressively worse and causes damage around the body.

We had never heard of myeloma before mum was diagnosed and we think, looking back, that she had been living with myeloma for a number of years. In October, all of a sudden and after three months in hospital, my mum died aged 58.

My mum always put others before herself and during the last three months in Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley, she kept her sense of humour and was always smiling.  Coming to terms with her death is proving very difficult for everyone who loved her.

My mum loved music and throughout 2008  I put on a series of concerts "Music4Myeloma" in the South West. The only target I set myself was to put on one show a month so that people could have a good time and raise funds and awareness for Myeloma UK in the process. Here's how I did:
JANUARY: Acoustic Plus at the Cheese and Grain, Frome

A delightful start to my campaign. An intimate evening of acoustic music featuring three performances from Skarper, Three Corners and Morales/Watts, who played a touching cover version of Biffy Clyro's Machines just for me. Amount raised £250

FEBRUARY: Rock show at Moles Club, Bath

An eclectic night featuring the ska'd up folk of the totally infectious Mandibles, the incredibly tight and rocktastic riffage of The Operation and the golden warm alt.country of The Doubtful Guest. Amount raised £434.

MARCH: Jazz at St James' Wine Vaults, Bath

Perhaps it was because of the Bath Half Marathon earlier in the day, but the turnout here was a little disappointing. All those joggers who had pounded the streets earlier in the day could have had their aches and pains massaged away by the relaxing tunes of the Jazzhouse Trio with guests Guy Harrup and Stan Scott. Amount raised £95.

APRIL: Keyna Jazzfolk at Compton Dando Village Hall

Tucked away in the beautiful little village of Compton Dando I witnessed a night of musical entertainment that was of an incredibly high standard from Three Piece Suite, The Cass Caswell Trio and Bethan James in an atmosphere which was both relaxed and friendly. Amount raised £267.

MAY: Metal Mayhem at The WunderBar, Midsomer Norton

It was thanks to headline act Sharp End First and frontman Flit that a rammed Wunderbar enjoyed a quality night's entertainment featuring two bands (SEF and Blood Of Ash) playing from the heart and delivering the goods. Amount raised £236.

MAY: Standard and Guardian Battle of the Bands heats one and two, Frome and Paulton

Two awesome nights featuring 12 amazing but diverse local bands: Baton De Colle, All Guns Blazing, More Than Life, Jakarta, Here On Out, A Bit Too Far, Grizwald and the BO Ties, Once Under, Until You're Heard, Sky Babies, Bloody Tourists and The Volt. Combined amount raised £1,034.

MAY: Classical concert at Wells Cathedral

Frome Festival Summer School's performance of Bach's B Minor Mass, featuring the Amadeus Orchestra and Frome Festival Chorus alongside soloists was conducted by and dedicated to my mum by Jason Thornton. Amount raised £460.

JUNE: Intimate Evening with Clare Teal at Invention Arts Studios, Bath

Halfway through my campaign and to coincide with Myeloma Awareness Week, I hoped to arrange something special – a big event that would attract a lot of interest and raise as much awareness for Myeloma UK as possible. Thanks to a wonderful evening with Clare these hopes were achieved. Amount raised £1.029.70.

JULY: Standard and Guardian Battle of the Bands Final at the Cheese and Grain, Frome

A powerful set from All Guns Blazing saw them claim the title of BotB winners 2008 over The Volt, Jakarta, Grizwald and the BO Ties, Sky Babies. Returning winners Fin Raziel also entertained the packed Grain. Amount raised £1,450.

JULY: Richard Ingham and the Amazing Street Cred Band at The Mission Theatre, Bath

A cabaret-style evening saw Richard and his band entertain with blues classics and legendary rock 'n' roll numbers alongside music from guest singer Etta Bingham, with jazz pianist Rupert Allsop and comedy from Roger Wiltshire. Amount raised £513.78.

AUGUST: Here On Out EP Launch at Frome Town Football Club

Times are tough at the moment and even tougher for bands trying to 'make it'. Here On Out could have easily pocketed any money raised to help further their career, but instead, supported my campaign. A great night too, also featuring Zer0.Point, Second Chance Sunday, Counting Days and All Guns Blazing. Amount raised £509.50.

AUGUST: Summer Soul, ECOS at the Merlin Theatre, Frome

One of the wettest Augusts on record and, more interestingly, the dullest since 1929. It took until the last Saturday of the month for the sun to finally crack a smile in the Somerset skies and, for me, such a unique event proved both a timely relief as this event was a funky outdoor show featuring Sloe Jam, Skarper and Lucky Sevens. Amount raised £498.65.

SEPTEMBER: Exit Stage Left and Paulton Amateur Dramatic Society in two Magical Nights of Musicals and Merriment at Kilmersdon Village Hall and Paulton Methodist Hall

The two separate groups combined their talents for the first time for two Magical Nights of Musicals and Merriment. My mum loved musicals and this special show took place at a poignant time for my family and I. Combined amount raised £1,056.65.

OCTOBER: Top tributes and one talented star at Frome Town Football Club

The Fabulous Blues Brothers and Who tribute band Who's Next joined forces with solo singer songwriter Nancy Black for a night of good times and great tunes. Amount raised £402.

NOVEMBER: Mozart's A Little Night Music at Rook Lane Chapel, Frome

An enchanting evening of classical music with the London Chamber Soloists, performing a magical programme that featured many wonderful works from 18th-century Vienna, which had been sponsored by Christine Meadows Consultancy. Amount raised £827.70.

DECEMBER: Punk party at the Cheese and Grain, Frome

It started as nine bands on two stages, but due to unforseen circumstances Second Chance Sunday had to pull out, leaving Orrible Sods, Here On Out, The Oz (from Russia), A Bit Too Far, Counting Days, UK Stiffs, More Than Life and Frenzy to bring my fundraising year to a frenzied close. Amount raised £702.67.

Combined with significant donations from Purr Promotions, the Bayman Charitable Trust, The Operation and Kilmersdon's Reel People Film Society, the total Music4Myeloma has raised for Myeloma UK in 2008 is £10,196.58.

It has been a very humbling process and I'm grateful to everyone who has helped to arrange a show, performed or attended – all this wouldn't have been achieved had it not been for you. Thank you.

You can still donate and make a difference here. Donating through this just giving site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to donate: Myeloma UK will receive your money electronically and, if you are a UK taxpayer, an extra 28% in Gift Aid will be added to your donation at no cost to you.
