Story

I DONE IT!!!

The weather was good running weather, cool and (mostly) dry. I started well, doing my run-walk plan for the first 16 miles. After that, my right knee (which was unsupported) decided to quit on me. :( Luckily I had a knee support on my left knee which I switched over. My left knee, incidentally, was perfectly fine.

The last ten miles were the most mentally things I've ever tackled. I wanted to stop, have a lie down, rub my feet whatever. But no, no, no, I just couldn't quite do that. I thought of the money raised to date. The fact that if I didn't finish I wouldn't get a medal (!) Behave with fortitude. The fact that failure was not an option. So I just gritted my teeth and got on with it.

It seemed so far, but somehow I found some of my good friends along the way (look out for the photos that I'll post once I get the picture CD from the marathon people), and in the sun's rays, amongst the chanting of my name, clapping and cheering, I ran the last 300 yards across the red finishing line. In fact a marshal had to wave his arms madly at me to get me to stop! hahahaha

I finally finished in 7 hours 36 minutes and 44 seconds. Rather a long time... But I was pleased that I completed it regardless, because I ahem... didn't do any real training for it, testament to the strength of my mind over my body - firm proof to non-believers (you know who you are...)

Thanks to all those who have given me support, it has been much appreciated and well worth it.

Fair Trials International helps people facing charges in a foreign country to obtain a fair trial, often encountering people imprisoned for months of years before their trial even starts, who have no idea of their rights, no comprehension of the local legal system and no legal aid to help them pay for a lawyer or interpreter. Without the help of FTI my friend would not be here with us today, I am certain of that. As some of you may know, a very good friend of mine had unfortunate reason to call on the services of FTI so its cause is close to my heart.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving  and once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity. Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

This weblink will be open until 25th July so please encourage friends and colleagues to donate.

Many thanks, and lots of love.
