Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page...

Hi. I am Nicci and I am bravely doing a wing walk in Oxford on the 13th August 2016 on behalf of Liam Carbery who is a patient at the Regional Neurosciences Centre at QEHB.

The aim for this event is too raise funds for this speciality, firstly, for vital research into one of his conditions called dystonia and others similar like Parkinson's disease and myoclonus, which are all Movement Disorders. Half of the money raised will help continue to fund a specialist research nurse / team to look into these conditions to understand better ways to help treat them. Liam is awaiting genetic testing for his condition and again, research may help others have the diagnosis at an earlier stage.

Secondly, the other half of the money raised will go to funding new and advanced equipment for the Neurology and Neurosurgical wards. As you can imagine this equipment can cost thousands of pounds, but with my wing walk, I am aiming to provide some funds to get this specialist diagnostic and therapeutic equipment they desperately need. Here are some of the items they require:

Bladder scanner - £2500

Patient's post-surgery or post spinal injuries in particular often have urinary retention. Having a bladder scanner to share between the 3 wards would mean easier access in order to assess patients when they are passing urine and at what volume sufficiency. This will also detect any issues that the patient may have and that may require catherterisation.

Rehabilitation games (1 set for each of 2 wards) £500 each Portable DVD player (1 for each of 2 wards) £100 each - This will help improve and rehabilitate cognitive function following brain injury. This will help regain and develop their speech; teach them how to be patient whilst playing the game as well as taking turns and assisting with the patient's memory.

I have always wanted to do a wing walk and I am very nervous about doing this, but at the same time, very excited as I know the funds raised will make a massive difference to patients like Liam and others who suffer severe and lifelong debilitating neurological conditions.

Please donate as much as you can! All donations are greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Nicci x
