Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In Feb 2009 I was diagnosed with stage 2a cervical cancer following a routine smear test. Four weeks later I had a radical hysterectomy. I was very fortunate that we had already decided that with Oliver (4) and Alfie (6 months) our family was complete.
Further tests revealed that of the 26 lymph nodes that were removed during the operation cancer was present in 1 of them; it was recommended that I had chemo and radiotherapy. I had 5 chemo sessions and 28 radiotherapy sessions over the next 5 weeks, and 1 session of brachytherapy. Fortunately it was all low dose treatment and I suffered relatively few side effects, and was able to return to work in the August.
In March 2014 following regular check ups I was discharged from the hospital. Although I effectively have an 'all clear' from cancer there are various side effects, mainly IBS and the menopause. It is really since my discharge that I have found Jo's Trust an invaluable support; the wealth of information on their website is fantastic, access to 'ask the expert' for any niggling questions and their online forum for anyone affected by cervical abnormalities or cancer.
I am far from a naturally athletic person, and have had moments of wondering what on earth I have signed up for! However, I am looking forward to challenging myself, increasing my fitness level and using the opportunity to raise money for Jo's Trust as well as raising awareness of cervical cancer, and the importance of smear tests.
