On 14th March 2008 i am flying to Tanzania to undertake a gruelling 9 day trek to the 19,000 foot high peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. I'm joining about 20 total strangers to walk for up to 13 hours a day through jungle, over moorland, into alpine desert, up over the snowline to the glacial terrain at the summit. Temperatures at the top may be as low as -30c and there will half the oxygen at the summit as there is at base camp. I'm hoping to avoid being hit too hard by altitude sickness. Those who've done the trek before me tell me to be prepared for the toughest test i've ever taken.

The purpose of this trip is not just a mid-life crisis or an attempt to escape the stresses and strains of life as a mother and divorce lawyer, but to raise vital funds for Whizz-Kidz, a national chidlren's charity. Whizz-Kidz work is just amazing: it changes the lives of disabled children in the UK by providing them with motorized wheelchairs and tricycles. An estimated 70,000 disabled children's lives would be significantly improved by the provision of customized equipment. Having that mobility equipment as early in their life as possible means children can learn the vital skill of independence: without independent mobility many disabled children develop a condition called "learned helplessness" which is when they become passive and reliant on others.. The sort of equipment Whizz-Kidz funds provide can enable them to join in at school, play with their friends and just enjoy other everyday activities that other children take for granted.
