Story
I have been selected for the Teachers on Top 2015 challenge organized by the Varkey Foundation and supported by Gulf For Good. This year, I will celebrate Independence Day with something even more spectacular than fireworks; from July 4th - 11th, I’ll be climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro! I am trekking the “Roof of Africa” to raise awareness and funds for the Varkey Foundation’s Teacher Training Program in Ghana. The cause chosen by the Varkey Foundation revolves around an enhanced professional development program for teachers in Ghana, Train for Tomorrow, which is delivered through instructional leadership, and the utilization of distance learning technology. 40 selected Train for Tomorrow schools (where technology will be installed) will act as model learning environments, and spaces for teachers to practice, and gain confidence in new skills. The intention is to reach over 400 schools and 4,000 teachers. The number of Train for Tomorrow schools will be able to trigger a ‘tipping point’ of influence in the local education system, as well as the quality of teaching practice and behavior beyond the walls of the schools themselves. The project will be built on a blended model of face-to-face delivery of the core training to the project’s Instructional Leaders, followed by a distance training program that includes continuous professional development (two hours every two weeks), as well as monitoring and coaching, which will leverage the Varkey Foundation’s existing technology infrastructure in Ghana. Together, these will deliver a powerful pedagogical program to develop the skills, knowledge, and capacity of teachers. The Varkey Foundation, in conjunction with Dubai Cares, will remain with these schools for two years. Please join me in supporting this noble cause.
