Story

We are supporting SOFT UK, a small charity supporting families, healthcare professionals, and businesses through a challenging experience.

SOFT UK helped myself and Paul in the days and weeks after losing our little boy Ben after a late pre-natal diagnosis of Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome). Our beautiful son was born sleeping at 31 weeks due to the condition. Trisomy 13 is an extra number 13 chromosome in every cell in the body resulting in a long list of potential symptoms.

Ben's symptoms presented as enlarged kidneys, malformed ears and eyes and a strawberry shaped skull. He would have been in a lot of pain due to his kidney size, blind and deaf and severely mentally disabled. He wasn't going to survive. He was a much wanted little boy.

SOFT UK support line were invaluable. They made us feel less alone, and gave us a small light at the end of the tunnel that we might survive his loss. We have had his story published on their website, and Paul has done a podcast from a Dads point of view. Knowing they are only a phone call away is a great comfort.

SOFT UK was founded in 1990 by Christine Rose and Jenny Robbins. As mothers, they were unfortunate enough to discover first-hand the lack of support and information available to families affected by Patau’s syndrome (Trisomy 13), Edwards’ syndrome (Trisomy 18) and related disorders.
