My son was diagnosed at 15yrs with Type 1. He had a cold and sore throat which lasted a couple of weeks. He was drinking lots of water as he had a sore throat. He was a typical lad who liked his bed but seemed tired and listless most of the time. He would come home from school tired and pale, go to bed and sleep for a few hours.  He had lost some weight, again, not eating from having a sore throat and cold. I noticed that he was going to the toilet almost every hour day and night. Got an emergency appointment with the gp and within 2 hours was an inpatient at the hospital. Diagnosis is very easy just a blood test. We were lucky; I new the symptoms, most children are diagnosed once they have collapsed or even become comatose. More children are being diagnosed at a young age; this is a life threatening, debilitating illness.
