Hi, thanks for visiting my fundraising page.
In February I will be undertaking my first big open water swim in the Red Sea off the coast of Dahab, Egypt in order to raise money for the Insulin Dependent Diabetes Trust (IDDT). I would really appreciate your support with this.
The swim will run for 5 days with an average distance of 4 km (yes that is kilometres!!) per day totalling 19km by the end of the week and will be a real challenge for me. When I started having lessons in May 2008 I could barely swim 2 lengths of some cobbled together stroke without collapsing in a heap. With the instruction, guidance and amazing support of Tim and Krista at the Reebok gym I've managed to:
- give up smoking (after 24 years!)
- learn front crawl to a reasonable level
- improve my overall fitness to the point where I can now swim 4km continuously (now there's just the small matter of being able to do that 5 days in a row and also in the sea with waves and non-killer(?) sharks!!)
I'm raising money for IDDT in memory of my amazing friend, Guy Culverwell, who was a lifelong diabetic. Guy died at the age of 36 in July 2008 and since then we have formed a relationship with IDDT and are planning events in Guy's memory in order to raise funds for the charity. IDDT does some excellent work, particularly educating children in how to manage their diabetes and insulin levels.
Justgiving sends your donation straight to IDDT and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. In addition Barclays Capital (my employer) have agreed to match any funds I raise up to £750!!
PLEASE NOTE: all funds raised will go to IDDT as I am covering the cost of the trip myself.
