Story

Ladies & Gentlemen

I am currently undergoing training to take part in part in a charity boxing tournament on December 12th with the intention of raising funds for The Shooting Star Children's Hospice. I hope that you will consider making a donation to this brilliant charity. You can read more about them here: http://www.shootingstar.org.uk/aboutus

I’ll be appearing on the card of “For Whom the Bell Tolls”, a evening of Victorian music hall entertainments and pugilistic exhibition on Saturday the 12th of December.  The venue for this fine night out is the Old Finsbury Town Hall, Roseberry Avenue, London EC1.

Although it has a Victorian theme, the bout will be in the manner of modern day Olympic boxing.  I’ll be wearing an ABA regulation head guard, mouth guard and 16oz gloves and fighting 3 two minute rounds.  I will, however, be stripped to the waist, clad in britches and boots with my exquisitely waxed upper lip smasher resplendent!  There’s a thought, eh!

Luckily, given the Olympic style of the fight, I will not be called upon to face a classically schooled Cuban or a man mountain from the Ukraine.  My opponent will be a fellow first timer, who has been training for the same period of time (12 weeks) and at the same fine institution, The Lion’s Den Boxing Club in Hoxton.  I can’t promise you a victory but I can assure you that my noble opponent will know dashed well that he’s in a fight!

I would be very grateful for your support, so please sponsor me if you can.  Even if you think I’m an absolute shower, please sponsor me!  After all, another large man will be trying to punch me in the head.  Surely that’s worth a few quid?

I should like to express my heartfelt thanks to Francesco, Wallace and Tony at The Lion’s Den for their no-nonsense training, encouragement and advice.  Many thanks as well to Sensei Kevin Archibald at Bushido Martial Arts, St. Albans, Jane at The Orchard Physiotherapy Clinic and Kathy at Slimming World for helping to get me ready to fight!

Many thanks in advance and best wishes.

I have the pleasure to remain, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Your humble servant,

Patrick "The Lionheart" Wheeler.
