Story

Thank you for visiting our just giving page in loving memory of my mum Kashmir and sister Paramjeet Bains.

Whist we have lost two pivotal and powerful members of our family, we would like to take the opportunity to tell our story and to thank the NHS staff in the AMU and ICU wards who went above and beyond to try and change the outcome that was, in the end, inevitable.

On January 2nd we got our first glimpse of how dangerous and merciless this virus can be. My younger sister Ambi was suffering from Covid 19 symptoms and was hospitalised. Leaving behind her husband and three young children all suffering COVID symptoms.

On Monday 4th January, my older sister Pom and Mum were also hospitalised, both having Covid symptoms. As the ambulances left taking them to hospital, It never occurred to us that this would be the last time Mum and Pom would be home.

Pom’s condition deteriorated overnight and sadly due to her learning difficulties she couldn’t comprehend why she needed to wear the CPAP oxygen mask, as it was really uncomfortable for her. She was then given an ordinary mask which was still too much for her to bear causing her condition to worsen. After a very difficult 2 hours, which I spent pleading and begging my sister to keep the mask on, her body gave up.

She suffered a major seizure. The amazing staff at the AMU intubated her and stabilised her with medication within seconds. But the damage was done, and I was informed that she had minutes left to live.

As my dad was making his way back to hospital, the hospital staff located my Mum and sister Ambi and bought them to Pom's bedside, still hooked up to their own oxygen supplies.

My family and I were by my sister's side as she passed away peacefully.

Over the next few days Ambi’s condition improved, but Mum’s did not. Having watched her daughter pass away, and being alone in the hospital ward took its toll on mums health. On the 11th January Mum was placed into a medically induced Coma.

Mum battled the virus for 3 weeks, but her condition continued to deteriorate. The virus had destroyed her lungs, and the carbon dioxide build up was starting to destroy her other organs.

On 2nd February, we made the agonising decision to turn off the life support machines that were keeping mum alive. We were allowed to be with her in her final minutes as she passed from this world into the next.

Throughout this difficult time we were time and time again blown away with how dedicated, compassionate  and hard working the NHS staff were and how they worked tirelessly around the clock to look after people and save lives.

My family and I will always be grateful for everything the NHS staff did.
