Story
Pedro Lopez is a British citizen and former refugee from war-torn Congo. He has initiated this two-man walk from London to Portsmouth (and back again!) with his friend Americo Rodrigues. Starting from The Salvation Army's Edward Alsop Homeless Centre in Westminster and finishing at The Catherine Booth Homeless Centre in Portsmouth, the 300-mile walk will visit numerous Salvation Army centres and raise sponsorship and awareness for The Salvation Army's work with the homeless.
A small but significant gesture, this walk symbolizes the fundamental relationship between the dispossessed and homeless person and their environment; the refugee often has no choice but to set off on foot towards an uncertain future. Pedro Lopez's own personal experience as a displaced person made homeless by war has prompted this walk, in gratitude to the British people and government for granting refuge and asylum to those fleeing persecution.
Pedro's story is featured in a forthcoming documentary, 'Bare Life', produced by Pequod Films and due for release later this year. The London-Portsmouth walk will be the subject of a short video work by artist Stephen Hall, and will document the journey.
