Fundraising for King's College Hospital Charity
When: 14th July to 18th July Where: to (About 500 Kms going the scenic route) Why: As you may recall I had quite a serious accident on 20 July 2007. It was the day before I was due to take a family holiday in France I was cycling home from work going downhill when a car pulled out directly in front of me. I hit the car quite hard (My cycle helmet left a dent in the rear pillar, apparently) I was flung into the air and the next thing I knew I was lying in the middle of the road, several people were around me telling me to keep still and to stay calm. Despite this I still tried to get up, fortunately a passing nurse insisted I lie still. The police arrived and called Justine and the kids; they arrived and came with me in the ambulance to . There I was seen by several Doctors in the A&E, and a doctor stitched the back of my head up (with a bit of help from my younger daughter Jessica) I was admitted to Kings. Over the next couple of days, my condition deteriorated and I was moved to intensive care where I spent the next five days in an induced coma on a life support system. At one point, my condition was critical. I had broken my back in three places, broken shoulder blade, elbow and ribs. Both of my lungs had collapsed and I had a double pulmonary embolism (a blood clot in both lungs). The latter proved difficult to treat as I had bruising on the brain. I owe my life and subsequent recovery to the medical team at Kings intensive care unit to whom I will be eternally grateful. It is ironic that my choice of charity event is to cycle from to , a journey which I failed to achieve nearly three years ago by car!!
