Pratham was started through UNICEF funding in 1994 with a mission to erase illiteracy amongst India’s 100 million under-privileged children. Pratham has already reached 21 million children since the launch of last year’s Read India campaign.
Utilising its ground-breaking teaching techniques, Pratham’s programmes are efficiently run by mobilising over 350,000 volunteers who currently work in more than half of India’s 600,000 villages. The cost of education per village is a mere $25.00 per annum.
To date, Pratham has received support from global philanthropists like Bill Gates (via the Hewlett Foundation), Susan and Michael Dell Foundation, Google, the Eureka Foundation, etc. Pratham is also recognised by the Clinton Global Initiative and its work has been researched and applauded by the MIT Poverty Action Lab.
Another 80 million children still need to be reached if our target of 100 million children by 2010 is to be achieved - a goal that is ambitious, but not impossible.
The support of Pratham UK is integral for this momentum to continue.
On May 23, a team of Pratham UK supporters are participating in a Half Olympic triathlon to be held at the Dorney Lake, which will be one of the venues for the 2012 Olympic Games. The race starts with a 750m open water swim in the clear, clean waters of the rowing lake before taking to the closed, flat road circuit for a 4-lap bike course covering 20.4km. The final 5km run follows a 2-lap loop along the side of the rowing lake on tarmac paths.
