On Top of the world in 2009

Not sure exactly why I like mountains but mountains seems to programmed into my DNA. It could be because I was born not far from the Khyber pass or because I was brought up near the Penines, Lake District and Derbyshire. Live in and love and even gone up Lochnagar.  It could be that as the Babylonians are reputed have wanted, I just want to get closer to God.

Love mountains I do, however, so when I found out that I could actually go up the highest range in the world in the world without being a mountaineer I decided I must look into possibilities.

One of the highest airports in the world is Skardu , from where you can go and stay in a hotel which has windows that overlook the Himalayan range. That was not option when I started thinking about my carbon footprint. In 2006 I discovered that I could do a charity challenge up to Everest Base Camp which would mean I could have an experience of a life time and off set my carbon emissions. So please sponsor.

Itinerary to include rest days exploring places such as Kathmandu, Namche,  Dingboche (4100m) for acclimatisation purposes and trekking between 3 to 8 hours a day. Our goal eventually is to reach Kalapatar, which lies at an altitude of 5545m.  From there we can go on to Everest Base camp where many a climber has set off to climb the world’s highest mountain

In February 2009 I had a great holiday in Egypt where I went into the Red pyramid. I ached the next day and realized that if I was to trek Everest I needed to a lot fitter. I then went to the Gym five times before my training weekend in Snowdon. I went up Snowdon on 15 March 2009 and the difference was pleasing.  It was not a walk in the park but it proved that training is all important.

The Snowdon weekend also confirmed that being on top of a mountain is a great place to be especially with the type of weather we had on the 15 March 2009
