I am trying to raise money for Alopecia. Alopecia was not a subject that I knew much about until recently. Alopecia is defined as a hair loss disease that affects men, women and children. The onset of hair loss is often sudden, random and frequently recurrent. While the disease itself is not damaging to the person's health, coping with hair loss can prove challenging. The exact cause of alopecia areata is presently not known, although it is generally agreed that it is a disease of the autoimmune system. In addition there is believed to be a genetic component in some cases and some studies have shown a link with stress. In alopecia, the affected hair follicles are mistakenly attacked by a person's own immune system (white blood cells), possibly due to chemicals called cytokines, resulting in the arrest of the anagen (hair growth) stage and a move to the telogen (resting) phase where the hairs are then abruptly shed.

I have always had very thick hair and when younger it was very long. I was the sort of person who whenever the subject of baldness was discussed was always told that it was something I would never have to worry about. Can you imagine how shocked I was to suddenly find that I had a small bald patch and that my hair was falling out? I visited my GP and was told it was Alopecia Areata. I was referred to a specialist and I have had treatment but it doesn’t seem to be working. I reached a point where I had lost 40% of my hair and although it may not have looked that bad due to the length of the rest of my hair, it was still falling out.

What could I do?

Cut it off!!!!

So I have and hopefully you will sponsor my head shave.

At my age it is not too much of a problem but this is an illness that affects many young people and women. For them it is far more devastating than for a man such as me who is well over the age of 21.
Donating through this site is simple, fast and totally secure. It is also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Alopecia will receive your money faster and, if you are a tax payer, an extra 28% in tax will be added to your gift at no cost to you.

So please sponsor me now!

Many thanks for your support.
