Story
The Challenge
To buy a car for £200 and drive 4,000 miles to Moldova, Europe’s poorest country, via the Arctic Circle. The teams have three weeks, to negotiate the route, which takes them through Germany, Sweden, Finland, Russia, and the Ukraine. On arrival in Moldova the cars will be donated to charity, and the teams have to make their own way back to England. With an eye towards global sustainability, all cars must be carbon neutralised. The grand send off will be Saturday 11th April from Hyde Park, London.
Matt Gorham and Gaz Jones have teamed up to do take on the challenge in a 1994 Citroen Ax, which has a grand total of 45bhp! Luckily the event is not a race, as we’re unlikely to be the first ones across the line...
Highlights of the trip will be: driving our mighty 45bhp machine around the notorious Nurbugring race track in Germany, dodging reindeer in the arctic circle and (hopefully), seeing the Northern Lights. We plan to have a lot of fun, and of course raise a lot of money for charity. All donations gratefully received!
Why Moldova?
Moldova is the poorest country in Europe, with a GNP of less than most African nations. The aim is to raise 1 million Moldova Leu’s (approx £48,000) for two Moldova charities, who are doing some incredible work with the poorest and most marginalised in Moldova. Moldova is a major source and, to a lesser extent, a transit country for women and girls trafficked for the purpose of commercial sexual exploitation. Moldovan women are trafficked to the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe; girls and young women are trafficked within the country from rural areas to Chisinau; children are also trafficked to neighbouring countries for forced labour and begging; labour trafficking of men to work in the construction, agriculture, and service sectors of Russia is increasingly a problem.
