Story

Sam

I wish I could say I am going to see my son today                             To hear his voice, to see his smile, to sit and talk with him for a while.                                                                                                        The hardest thing in life to bear                                                               Is to want your son and he is not there.

My son, Sam, died suddenly at home on Sunday, 3 June 2007.  He was 18.  No cause has been found for his death.

The night before Sam had returned home from Birmingham University where he was reading geology and geography.  He had just finished his first year exams.  He was worried he was going to fail these exams and let us down.  He needn't have, he passed them all but he never knew.  We are so proud of him.

In memory of Sam, Sam's father Bill and I are planning to raise money for the NSPCC, the charity we know Sam had shown an interest.  Sam was lucky.  He came from a loving, caring home but he appreciated that not all children were so fortunate.  We hope to raise money to be able to help alleviate the pain and suffering of those unfortunate children.  We hope Sam will be proud of his parents.

I and 4 friends (Karen, Kay, Sally and Annie), who have loyally walked the path with me since that dreadful day, are embarking on a 145 mile walk from Birmingham University to Wellington School in Somerset where Sam attended his secondary education.  This is quite an ambitious challenge for not so fit nearly 50 years old!  Following us will be Linda in our support vehicle, just in case!  Our walk will start at Birmingham University on Saturday, 27 September 2008 and we plan to arrive at Wellington School on Saturday, 4 October 2008.

My husband, Bill, will then take over the fundraising.  He is arranging a charity rugby match between Wellington School 1st Team and Wellington Rugby Club Colts to be held on Sunday, 5 October 2008 at the Wellington Rugby Club.  The plan is for a fun day to remember Sam.

Sam was a hugely popular boy who is deeply missed by all his friends and family.  He was our world and we are completely lost without him.  By directing our energy into these challenges helps alleviate our pain a little.  By supporting us, you are remembering Sam and helping those unlucky children.

The Sam Sherwin Tribute Fund has been set up through the NSPCC charity enabling all money raised on behalf of Sam to be used to help children in our local area.
